Human Chain on the World Refugee Day: ensure justice to climate change induced forced migrants

20 June 2009: On the day of ‘World Refugee Day 2009’ hundreds of people from different professional groups, NGO/CSO representatives, and climate change affected people formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club, Dhaka while they demanded social, cultural and economic rehabilitation of the climate change induced forced migrants. Addressing to the common mass from the Human Chain EquityBD argued that the 1951 Geneva Convention on Refugees’ does neither cover nor comply the core characteristics of the climate change induced migrants and demanded a separate, independent legal and political regime under a Protocol to safeguard the ‘climate change induced migrants ’.

Voice of the Victims: forced migrants demanded a dignified life as a sovereign citizen

19 June 2009: Prior to the World Refugee Day, 20 June 2009, Equity and Justice Working Group Bangladesh (EquityBD) demanded dignified recognition and rehabilitation of the climate change induced forced migrants under a new Protocol under the UNFCCC. In the press conference two forced migrants, Md Abdul Khaleque and Mariam Begum from from a coastal Island, described how they were forced to flee to a urban slum after losing their all belongings by river bank erosion. Mariam Begum, along with her 5 daughters, forced to flee from Bhola island to a Slum in Dhaka where she constantly faces insecurity about her grown-up daughters. She demanded dignified life and all civic rights to live as a sovereign citizen

Global campaign for dignified recognition and resettlement of the CC induced migrants: Sign the CALL |
In April 2009 EquityBD, along with its campaign members, launched a campaign to realize the rights of climate change induced forced migrants, who are incorrectly termed as ‘climate refugees’ or ‘environmentally displaced persons'. EquityBD launched this campaign calling global leaders to develop a new legal instrument under a Protocol to the UNFCCC to ensure social, cultural and economic rehabilitation of the ‘climate change induced forced migrants’ through recognizing them as ‘Universal Natural Persons’.
