International Rural Women Day (IRWD) 2009, Observed

Implementation of the National Health Policy require greater Accountability, Transparency and Functional decentralization of country’s health sector

Considering the global theme of International Rural Women Day (IRWD) 2009 "Claim your Right to Health and Well-being!’ the day observance national committee has been observed the day in countrywide in63 districts. For this the national secretariat declared a three-day program.These are: 1) Press conference in both local and national level on 14 October 2) National seminar at Dhaka press club, and rally, meeting and seminar in district level on 15 October; and 3) cultural program in the premise of national Shahid minar on 16 October. On 14 October:The committee has organizedapressbriefingat national press club,Dhaka. SwaponGuha, chairperson of the national committee, moderated the press conference while Mustafa Kamal Akanda, secretary of the national committee, read out the press statement and brief the country-wide program before the press. please see details

On 15 October, the committee organized a national seminarconsidering the mentioned national theme at national press club, Dhaka. In her welcome speech Ms. Sarmin Islam Daisy, a member of the day observation committee, said that rights and access to the basic health services of rural women is a critical concern for the country. Therefore the global theme of IRWD in 2009 "Claim your Right to Health and Well-being!’ is correspondingly important for the country. Swapon Guha moderated the seminar while Atiqul Islam Chowdhury and Mustafa Kamal Akanda of EquityBd, presented the key note paper which focused on the real scenario of health services at local level.The speakers of the seminar said that the implementation of ‘National Health Policy 2009’ will not possible until or unless the greater accountability and transparency of this sector ensured. Finally, on 16 October 2009 the IRWD observance Dhaka committee organized the program with the support of Rupantar , PRADIP and Equitybd. Cultural team of Rupantar has performed pot gan (thematic song) to create awareness among the people.
