Climate Change Talks in Copenhagen and EquityBD Participation

The world leaders from 192 countries met in Copenhagen, Denmark, from December 7 to 18th December, 2009 to negotiate an agreement under the UNFCCC to protect the Earth from the climate change and its impacts. Aside with the official negotiation process of the country Parties, CSO (Civil Society Organization) accross the globe also gathered in Copenhangen under an alternative platform called 'Klimaforum09' to raise people's concern and views in the climate change negotiation. EquityBD (Equity and Justice Working Group Bangladesh) participated many of the Klimaforum events and also organized a number of events to voices of the people of Bangladesh for climate justice and a 'just deal' in CoP 15.

Post Copenhagen Press Briefing: Peoples’ Struggle in Copenhagen and the Accord of Discord”.
Dhaka, 27 December 2009:  EquityBD organized a press conference to share outcomes of theCoP 15 and contents of the Copenhagen Accord. Md. Shamsuddoha of EquityBD described the expectation and outcome of Copenhagen climate summit. He also termed COP 15  as the failure of global leadership. In his statement Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Convener EquityBD, said ' we have to act together to change the system that are responsible for climate change. He also emphasized importance of global CSO movement to create pressure to the political system andglobal leadership. Through this press briefing EquityBD urged the government to lead and strengthen LDCs and MVCs in climate change negotiation. They also put forward few suggestions for the government to follow in the future negotiation process. Details

Seminar on 'Issues and Concerns of the LDCs in climate change negotiation: position of the CSOs' 
Copenhagen, 14th December, 2009: EquityBD, in association with  LDC Watch, Jubilee South, SAAPE, RRN and MS Action Aid Denmark organized a seminar to raise concern of the CSOs of the LDCs in climate change negotiation. In this seminar CSO leaders from the LDCs urged for justice to the least developed countries those already are adversely affecting by the impacts of climate change. They also called LDCs to act together to claim compensation of carbon debt and ecological debt from the developed / annex-1 countries..

Dembe Musa from Senegal, Cemil Chalmers from Haiti, Azeb Gimri from Ethiopia, Aloys from Rwanda, Kong Sung from Cambodia, Alsa Pinto Oka from Timor Leste, Saheen Anam from Bangladesh and Tashmina Netra from  Nepal gave testimonies on climate change impact in their countries. Dr. Arjun Karki of LDC Watch moderated the seminar.

Seminar ‘Climate Change Induced Forced Migrants: in need of a new protocol under UNFCCC'
Copenhagen, 11 December, 2009:  EquityBD organized a seminar at Klimaforum09 demanding social, cultural and economic rights of the climate change induced migrants. Seminar titled “Climate Change Induced Forced Migrants: in need of a new protocol under UNFCCC' was organized in association with LDC Watch and SAAPE while they termed climate migrants as 'Universal Natural Persons'.

In the key note presentation Md Shamsuddoha, General Secretary of EquityBD, said 'there is no legal framework in place to safeguard and rehabilitate climate change induced migrants and they should not be termed and treated as refugees'. Prominent CSO activist and Executive Director of Green Peace International, Kumi Naido, said governments and leaders has to be made accountable, civil societies has to come with greater alliance to force G8 and UNFCCC to recognize the rights of climate change induced forced migrants. Among others Beverly Keene of Jubilee South, Lidy Nacpil of Jubilee South APMDD, Shaheen Anam of Manusher Jonno Foundation, Tim Jones of World Development Movement spoke in the seminar and expressed solidarity and support to the movement. Photo Exhibition on Climate Change Impact in Bangladesh

EquityBD, in association with CSRL and Saptahik, organized a Photo Exhibition at Purple Hall 1, DGI Byen, Kodybyan from 9 to 16 December 2009. Saheen Anam, Executive Director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, Bangladesh, inaugurated the photo exhibition titled “ Bangladesh : The Ground Zero of Climate Change”.
