Observation of World Rural Women Day (WRWD)
during 25 to 31st October


Activists from 64 Districts Vow to Campaign for Right to Food

Dhaka  29th September 2007. Today women activists from 64 districts gathered in a conference room of national press club with the invitation of National Committee on Observation of WRWD.  Representative from different districts on observation of the day gave speech and elaborated their different program during the week;, These are

 

 

  1. Seed fair, rally, popular cultural program, prizes to rural women for seed preservation and seminar at Upazilla and District level
  2. Development of 5 policy briefs on different aspect of food rights and food sovereignty; these are i) Historical background on World Rural Women day and this year’s theme, ii) food sovereignty and food security nexus, iii) role of rural women in securing food security iv) Role of neo-liberal policies undermining food rights v) privatization and commercialization of agriculture and marginalizing small farmers.
  3. Press conference and release of policy briefs
  4. National seminar on food sovereignty in the morning of 25th October
  5. Popular cultural festival with seed fair in national martyr monument at Dhaka University campus in the afternoon of 25th October.

Specific demands of this campaign are;

  1. Employment guarantee scheme with the provision of 50% a must for rural women,
  2. Revival of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC)  for promotion of local seeds,
  3. Inclusion of community and farmers right in draft bio diversity protection act and inclusion of individual food rights in the constitution.
           

The observation committee is being backed by Equity and Justice Working Group-EJWG and this is the  12 year of observation of WRWD by this committee in countrywide. For more information
